All the original modern art paintings on this site are by UK artist Keith Garrow, who has developed a unique style of painting that follows a direct line from the abstract expressionist movement. The paintings are executed over a period from a few months to a few years and are all high quality oil paints on canvas stretched over wooden stretchers.
There are some excellent quality prints available on the Modern Art Prints pages, including reproductions of Pablo Picasso, Marc Rothko, Wassily Kandinsky, Jackson Pollock, Paul Klee, and Gustav Klimt. Modern art is a term that encompasses a huge range of work covering more than a hundred years, and you can find more information about all the main avant garde movements that have led the development of contemporary art on the Modern Art Movements pages. Modern art covers an enormous range of different types of art, from painting and sculpture to prints, performance and film as well as the most diverse range of styles imaginable.
The roots of modern art can be traced back to the middle of the nineteenth century, with the major breakthroughs taking place in the early part of the twentieth century. Artists like Kandinsky and Picasso did much to make the most forceful breaks with tradition which are the epitome of what modern art stands for.
Modern art as painting was taken a step further in the middle of the twentieth century when the American Abstract Expressionists effectively removed the remaining boundaries in terms of what most people understood about the subject and form of paintings. The geographical centre of the modern art movement moved to New York at this time, after being centred on Paris for most of the earlier years.
