I love Rothko's work - no home should be without one! Have a look at some of my favourite abstract paintings by Mark Rothko - this selection includes all my favourite rothko prints. For further information on the artist read the Mark Rothko Biography below.
Mark Rothko (1903 – 1970) was born Marcus Rothkowitz in Dvinsk, Russia. He moved to the USA when he was ten years old and settled in Portland, Oregon. He moved to New York in 1925 and studied under Max Weber at the Art Students League.
In 1935 he was one of the founding members of the artists’ group called ‘The Ten’, who were interested in abstraction and expressionism. Rothko developed his mature style, for which is best known, during the late 1940s and early 1950s. These are the striking and utterly original paintings in which soft-edged, flat rectangles of colour seem to float against the canvas surface.
New York’s Museum of Modern Art gave Rothko a solo exhibition in 1961 and he took on an important commission for the Interdenominational Chapel in Houston in 1964. Mark Rothko took his own life on 25th February 1970.
